Can you rush an analysis for jury draw or trial?
The more time we have before a court event the better. The complex and ever shifting landscape of drugs and poly drug submissions has increased our analysis time, interpretation and review of data. Please reach out to the drug supervisor to discuss what is needed.
Can you weigh our submitted evidence sample so charges can be brought?
We will not provide a preliminary weight separate from the analysis and final report. Please refer to the heroin/fentanyl affidavit that is issued annually for assistance charging cases with glassine bags.
Should I include my used field test kit with the submitted evidence?
No. Field test kits contain strong acids/bases and if they leak, could compromise/destroy the evidence.
Can you analyze drug evidence before the arraignment date?
It is unusual to have drug cases completed by the arraignment date. We will expedite cases where inconclusive field test results are obtained as well as cases with an upcoming motion hearing and/or trial. If there is an investigative need for expedited analysis, please reach out to the drug section supervisor.
Can you differentiate between hemp and marijuana?
No, hemp and marijuana are from the same species and while we can see the active compounds THC and CBD in both hemp and marijuana, we do not quantitate % Delta 9 THC to differentiate the two.
Where can I send my sample if I need to have “cannabis” confirmed?
Please contact the VFL.
Can you determine % purity for methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana/CBD or other compounds?
No. We do qualitative analysis (determining if a compound is present) but do not provide quantitative testing (purity determination).
Can you supply plastic evidence bags, paper evidence bags and sharps containers?
No.
I have more questions; who do I contact?
We are happy to answer your questions. Please direct questions to DPS.VFLAdmin@vermont.gov and they will be forwarded accordingly.
Does the weight on the report include packaging?
The drug section reports net weights (without packaging) unless noted otherwise.
How do I interpret a drug report?
See “Tips on Reading Drug Reports” under Documents.
What compounds can be seen by the drug section’s instrumentation?
The VFL uses a variety of scientific instrumentation that is both highly sensitive and selective for the detection of hundreds of compounds, regulated/unregulated, controlled/non-controlled.
