Firearms are examined by the laboratory to determine if they are properly functioning in the condition that they were collected as evidence. The examination includes testing operability of the safety features, documenting physical characteristics of the firearm, and determination of manufacturer, model and serial number. Each firearm submitted to the section is examined to determine whether it is in normal mechanical operating condition and [it is] test fired, when possible.
